The girl’s head basketball coach at Waverly-Shell Rock High School, Greg Bodensteiner, is the new head women’s golf coach at Wartburg.  Athletic Director Rick Willis made the announcement May 17.

“I have experience playing NCAA Division III golf while at Loras College and have a passion for the sport,” Bodensteiner said. “At the college level, I believe it is about leading, helping and guiding the players to achieve their goals.

“It has been a dream of mine to coach golf and feel fortunate for this opportunity,” he continued. “I am excited to take over a program that has had the success Wartburg women’s golf has experienced under Coach Severson and it is my hope to maintain that success going forward.”

Current coach Monica Severson announced her resignation earlier this year to take a job at Thrivent Financial.

Bodensteiner was a four-year member of the Loras men’s golf team and graduated in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Bodensteiner was the top team finisher at the Iowa Conference Championships his junior year and the Duhawks finished as high as third twice in his career.  In his senior year, he won the Clarke Oktoberfest and Loras Spring Invitational and finished in the top five at two other competitions that season.

“We needed an experienced coach with a passion for golf to fill this position and certainly believe we have found that with Greg,” said Willis. “He is well prepared to carry on the tradition of this outstanding program.”

Bodensteiner begins his duties on June 1.
