Helping Hands Clothing Closet in Sumner, Iowa, and His Hands Food Pantry in Oran, Iowa, are two free and confidential organizations to help families in need of necessities like food, clothing, blankets and toiletries.
Pastor Sandra Burroughs of St. John Lutheran Church and St. Peter Lutheran Church saw a need in the community for a place for families to go for items that they could not afford at stories like Goodwill.
“About four years ago, I went to the church council and asked them to pray for those families in need. We had a building used for storage across the street and the church agreed and were eager to transform it into a clothing closet,” Burroughs said.
After a couple months of witnessing the true need for the clothes, the church decided on providing a food pantry after a local food pantry closed down.
Within two months of the food pantry closing down, the church received a donated building from someone in the community to make it a food pantry.
The coordinator of the clothing closet Laure Meyer and Pastor Burroughs said they feel like they are doing the Lord’s work day in and day out when helping a family in need.
They both suggest to volunteer a little of your time to help those in need whether it be a simple donation or to help out at the stores during their hours.
Helping Hands Clothing Closet Hours are Tuesdays 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Wednesday 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month.
