IIAC Roundup: Week 8

Buena Vista and Wartburg both held serve Saturday to set up a first-place showdown Saturday in Storm Lake.

The Knights have won six IIAC games in a row dating back to last year, the Beavers eight.

Wartburg won last season’s contest, 37-29, en route to the conference crown.

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Dylan Barrett’s two-yard touchdown run with 36 seconds remaining capped a four-play, 77-yard drive in 57 seconds that lifted BV to its fifth straight victory. Bobby Brown was 3-of-3 for 67 yards, including a 43-yard toss to Ben Seitz, on the final drive and finished the game as the school’s new record holder for touchdown passes in a season (20). Brown had three touchdowns on 23-of-37 passing for 306 yards and two interceptions. Barrett ran for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Fry threw for 385 yards and five touchdowns, three to Tyler Rutenbeck, for the Spartans. Neither team led by more than five points in a back-and-forth second half. They combined for 1,002 offensive yards.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Aaron Eiseler’s nine-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Boerm with 12 seconds left in the first half gave the Dutch the lead and they never looked back, outscoring the Kohawks 28-7 in the second half to roll to a third straight victory. The Dutch were balanced offensively, passing for 251 yards and rushing for 172. Jacob Edleman’s 59-yard pick six with just under 10 minutes remaining gave Central a 17-point lead and put the game out of reach. Josh Rekers threw three touchdown passes, but also two costly interceptions. His first pick with 1:22 left in the first half set up Central’s 69-yard scoring drive.

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Loras won an Iowa Conference football game for the first time since it snapped an eight-game league losing skid with a Sept. 29, 2012, win over Luther. The win Saturday in which it never trailed ended 16-game IIAC losing streak. Simpson quarterback Braedon Tovey threw four interceptions, including a 53-yard fourth-quarter pick six to Maurice Young that gave the Duhawks a 10-point lead. Loras was turnover-free for the first time this season. Robert Kelly passed for 304 yards, 169 of them to Nate Even, who tallied 11 catches. Simpson finds itself at the bottom of the league standings after a 3-0 start in the non-conference schedule.
