The Wartburg men’s basketball team won in epic fashion at home on Wednesday night, taking down the Coe Kohawks in overtime, 72-69.
It was a single-digit game throughout, with the largest lead at any point in the game being just eight points. The Knights were on top for the vast majority of the game, with the Kohawks only leading five different times for very brief stints throughout the entire game.
The Kohawks were ahead by one point with less than a minute and a half left, when the Knights’ Jaran Sabus hit a clutch layup. The Knights led for the rest of the game, if only narrowly, until Spencer Williams hit one of two free throws to tie the game with 32 seconds to go.
The overtime period was also close throughout, with the largest lead of the game being just four points in Wartburg’s favor. Like the women’s game before it, it was a one-possession game that came down to a last-second Kohawk three. And like the women’s game before it, the last-second three missed the mark.
In the scoring column, it was the battle of the centers. Spencer Williams of the Kohawks scored 25 points on 11-15 from the field and Wartburg’s Josh Gehling chiming in with a career-high 22. With the win tonight, the Knights clinch either the four or five spot in the Iowa Conference tournament.
Their seeding will be determined on Saturday, when they finish out the regular season on the road against Central. That game will be broadcast live on 89.9, KWAR, with Jon Mohwinkle and Matt Kerns on the call. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
