Sports Shorts: Sept. 24

WOMEN’S GOLF

No. 21 Wartburg placed fifth at the College City Classic hosted by Carleton College over the weekend.

The Knights finished with a team score of 686 led by Kelsi Sawatzky and Samantha Heinen who tied for 13th with scores of 171.

Morgan McMillan tied for 19th with a 173 and Taylor Roberts shot a 182, good for 36th place.

Carleton won the championship with a team score of 653.

Wartburg begins competition at the Iowa Conference Championships in Cedar Falls this weekend.

MEN’S GOLF

Ryan Shields’ score of 159 tied him for second place and led the Wartburg men’s golf team to an eighth place finish at the Dubuque Invite over the weekend.

Lance Johnson tied for 35th with a 160 and John Sexton shot a 161, tying him for 40th place.

Meanwhile, Jordan Conrad’s score of 162 tied him for 44th and Mitch Martin tied for 50th, shooting 164.

Clarke University won the meet, which featured 18 teams, with a total team score of 607.

The Knights will compete at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament this weekend.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Wartburg competed at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Gustavus Adolphus over the weekend.

In singles play, Jenny Dallenbach defeated Bari Reynolds of Carthage, 6-4, 6-4, but fell to Carleton’s Bridget Doyle in the second round, 6-0, 6-4.

Melissa Davis also went 1-1 in singles play, defeating Abby Cornelius of UW-Stout, 6-2, 6-4, but lost to UW-Whitewater’s Sidney Divelbiss, 6-1, 6-0.

Dallenbach and Michelle McKenzie lost to Molly Hemes and Claire Spencer of Carleton, 9-7, in the first round of the doubles tournament.

Davis and Claire Evans were defeated by Carleton’s Bridget Doyle and Mikayla Becich, 8-5.

Both doubles teams competed in the consolation round, losing to teams from Gustavus Adolphus and St. Thomas, 8-1 and 8-4, respectively.

The Knights return to conference play with four home matches this week beginning with Dubuque Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Then Wartburg hosts Simpson and Central Saturday at 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. before hosting Buena Vista Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
