Wartburg’s football and men’s soccer team each clinched automatic bids to the NCAA tournament with wins Saturday, and their players were rewarded with Iowa Conference distinction.
Quarterback Logan Schrader is the IIAC co-Male Athlete of the Week and Football Offensive Player of the Week after tying a school record for the second time this season with five touchdown passes.
He was 24-of-35 for 376 yards while also running for a score in the fifth-ranked Knights’ 41-10 win.
The men’s soccer team swept the Iowa Conference’s weekly awards after winning the IIAC tournament in a penalty kick shootout at No. 8 Loras.
Tyler Salzwedel, who scored with eight seconds remaining in the first half to put the No. 22 Knights up 1-0, is the Offensive Player of the Week.
Midfielder Brady Anderson converted the final penalty kick to give Wartburg the title and was named Defensive Player of the Week. Anderson helped the Knights’ defense force its ninth shutout of the year in a 1-0 semifinal victory over No. 12 Luther.
Central cornerback Jacob Edleman is the other co-Male Athlete of the Week, while Coe libero Alissa Wittenburg received Female Athlete of the Week honors.
