The Wartburg volleyball team took a trip to Cornell College Saturday to face Cornell and Wheaton (Ill.) in Cornell’s Triangular.
The Knights split their matches, losing the first and winning their second.
The Knights took on Cornell (21-6) first and dropped the match 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 in a rematch of Wartburg’s Sept. 12 win.
In the first set, the Knights kept it close early with Cornell leading 7-5. That’s when Cornell went on an eight-point streak and Wartburg was never able to overcome that lead.
In the second set, Wartburg stayed close throughout most of the set. Cornell took a three-point streak at the end of the set to put it away 25-19.
The last set began close with Wartburg even with Cornell at 11-all. That’s when Cornell took control and never let Wartburg come close.
Bailey Wilson had 13 kills with a .345 hitting percentage. Jamie Farley put up 15 digs, followed by Anne Buscher with 11.
Cornell went on to beat Wheaton 25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18 to continue its 13-match winning streak.
Wartburg also played Wheaton in their second match of the day. Wartburg won in three close sets, 26-24, 25-21, 26-24.
Wilson again had 13 kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Emma Harmeyer and Maria Brown led the team in assists with 18 and 16, respectively.
The Knights are now 24-10 overall. Wartburg will play in the Iowa Conference semifinals this Thursday at home against the winner of the Buena Vista (23-10, 5-2) and Dubuque (12-23, 2-5) quarterfinal match which will take place this Tuesday. Wartburg beat both teams in regular season play.
