The top-ranked Wartburg Knights’ winning streak of 59 straight duel matches was broken when #14 UW-Whitewater upset them at the Candlewood Suites Duels. Wartburg still went 2-1, posting wins over UW-Stevens Point and #17 UW-La Crosse.
Wartburg won the first match of the day against UW-La Crosse, 25-9.
At 125 pounds, Connor Cleveland was defeated by UW-La Crosse’s Nelson Baker by a 10-4 decision.
Weighing in at 133 pounds, Brennan Doebel won by a 9-4 decision over UW-La Crosse’s Quinn Miracle.
Brock Rathbun posted a technical fall at 141 pounds to beat the Eagles’ Hayden Schlough.
In the 149 pound class, Cross Cannone won by major decision over UW-La Cross’s Kal Gerber 13-4.
Logan Thomsen won by an 11-8 decision at 157 pounds over Eagle Michael Murnane.
At 165 pounds, Derek Lee Loy defeated Logan Schlough by major decision, 12-3.
Sawyer Massie of UW-La Crosse won by an 11-4 decision over Brice Duhe at 174 pounds.
At 184 pounds, Tyler Lutes won by a 2-1 decision over UW-La Crosse’s Sean O’Neil.
Kyle Fank came in at 197 pounds to post a 7-1 decision over the Eagles’ Wesley Schultz.
In the 285 pound weight class, Knight Bowen Wileman was defeated by Konrad Ernst by a 8-2 decision.
Next, the Knights faced UW-Stevens Point, winning by a score of 39-16.
In the 125 pound class, Brady Kyner won by major decision over UW-Stevens Point’s Matt Berlin, 12-4.
At 133 pounds, Brendan Baker won by fall over the Pointers’ Bobby Uttecht in 55 seconds.
Brock Rathbun won by fall over UW-Stevens Point’s Logan Newton in 1:58.
Cross Cannone got the technical fall over Pointer Nick Pretto, winning 18-3.
In the 157 pound class, UW-Stevens Point’s Boone Roycrat won by a 10-1 major decision over Blake Meyer.
At 165 pounds, Max Forsyth defeated the Pointers’ Jaden Boivin by fall in 2:17.
In the 174 pound class, Dan Squires beat Knight Trevor McLaughlin by fall in 51 seconds.
Kyle Briggs won in the 184 pound class over Pointer Cody Nielson by fall in 3:26.
Dylan Diebitz won by fall in the 197 pound weight class over Zach Lamphere in 2:20.
Rounding out the duel was a victory by Lance Evans at 285 pounds over UW-Stevens Point’s Ross Agg by fall in 2:48.
Wartburg’s final opponent was #14 UW-Whitewater, who defeated the Knights 21-20.
At 125 pounds, the Warhawk’s Mike Tortorice won by decision over Connor Cleveland, 5-2.
Hazen Rice at 133 pounds defeated Knight Brennen Doebel by fall at 3:38.
In the 141 pound weight class, UW-Whitewater’s Devin Tortorice beat Brock Rathbun by a 4-3 decision.
Cross Cannone finished victorious at 149 pounds with a technical fall over Warhawk Wilder Wichman, 17-2.
Logan Thomsen beat UW-Whitewater’s Isaiah Vela by a 9-1 major decision.
In the 165 pound match, Warhawk Ryder Sigler defeated Derek Lee Loy by a 3-2 decision.
At 174 pounds, Nicholas Bonomo had a major decision over Max Forsyth, 14-2.
Tyler Lutes won by fall over UW-Whitewater’s Nick Stencel in 34 seconds.
At 197 pounds, Jordan Newman won by decision over Knight Kyle Fank, 4-2.
Lance Evans won by fall at 285 pounds over the Warhawk’s Dylan Uzumecki in 58 seconds.
Head coach Eric Keller said that while they may have lost the duel, what matters is how the team recovers.
“[It’s] time to redefine what hard is. Time to find another gear and dig a little deeper,” Keller said. “There is no doubt in my mind that is what each guy will do. That is who we are and I know what this teams goals are. Time to quit talking about it and do it.”
